CALD
CALD stands for culturally and linguistically diverse. It is the standard term used by Australian government and health services to describe communities whose cultural or language background is other than English, and it frames most multicultural communication and language-access policy.
How it works
CALD is a demographic and policy category, not a single language group. It covers people whose cultural or linguistic background is other than English, which in Australia spans hundreds of communities and languages, from long-established migrant groups to newly arrived ones.
Because the category is broad, useful planning goes beneath it: which specific languages, which communities, what literacy and settlement patterns. Averaged across all of CALD, the picture hides the differences that decide whether communication actually reaches people.
How SourceTarget uses it
SourceTarget is built for Australian CALD communication: translating government and health content into and out of community languages, with cultural adaptation and human review sized to the audience. Language and community data informs which pairs and formats a job needs.
